Students have the opportunity to participate in a variety of extra-curricular activities based on their grade level, such as Chess Club, Academic Decathlon, Math Counts, Liturgical Dance, Recorder Consort, Choir, Yearbook and Musical Theater.
Chess club meets weekly to learn techniques and tips for improving their chess skills. Children of all ages and skill levels are welcome.
Academic Decathlon is open to 6th-8th grade students. Under the guidance and tutelage of teachers and parents, students compete in ten events. Two are collaborative team efforts – a logic quiz with 20 rigorous thinking problems, and a super quiz with 50 multiple choice questions on five broad academic themes. The remaining eight events test individual knowledge of the Roman Catholic doctrine, English, Literature, Science, Mathematics, Current Events, Social Studies, and Fine Arts (Art and Music). Awards are given for individual and team performance, and the winning school team from each geographic diocese competes in a state championship the first Saturday of May each year.
Our Math Counts team competes annually in a rigorous competition. Students in 6th through 8th grade may participate. This a dedicated group of students who meet outside of class to be highly prepared for the competition.
The liturgical dance group is comprised of students in Grades 2-5. They express their faith and pray through dance at school masses. The dances are choreographed by Ms. Ferris, our second grade teacher, who has a bachelor’s degree in dance. The dance flows out of the music and is an emotionally powerful way to inspire churchgoers.
Choir is open to students in grades 3rd through 8th. The choir sings at school Masses and provide students an opportunity to express their faith through music.
The yearbook team is led by Mrs. Escalante. It produces a keepsake annually, full of pictures representing the activities and events that students have engaged in during the year.
The musical theater students, under the guidance of Ms. Kathy Jordan and Mr. Galvez, produce a Christmas program each year. Mrs. Jordan holds a bachelor’s degree in musical theatre from Western Michigan University. Students create the sets with the leadership of Mrs. Leslie Plunkett, the art teacher. Students can participate behind the scenes as members of the stage crew, or on stage in a variety of roles. Past performances include Scrooge and Annie Get Your Gun. In the spring, all students participate in the Spring Sing, in which each class performs a few songs under the direction of the music teachers.
